"The modeh ani (I offer thanks before You, etc.) is said first thing in the morning upon awakening before washing the hands, even while the hands are yet “impure.” The reason is because none of the impurities in the world can defile a Jew’s “modeh ani.” He might lack one thing or another, but his “modeh ani” remains intact.
